THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

It is vital that we sow the seeds of goodness in order to cultivate justice,  foster accord and sustain integration without growing weary.

                                                                                          - Pope Francis

FROM THE MUSIC MINISTRY

As we begin the Lenten season, our worship and lifestyles may take a decidedly introverted tone.  Maybe we eat less.  We are perhaps fasting or “giving up” something we might ordinarily take for granted or wholeheartedly enjoy.  While Lent is a time to reflect on our world and our place in it, more importantly it is a time to get closer to our Lord Jesus through his sacrifice and gain a greater understanding of what He endured for us.  Without all the pomp and circumstance of the King that He was, is and always will be, He entered and left this world carrying the burden of our sins and paid the ultimate price for us.  There is no earthly king I have known, or will ever know, humble and selfless enough to resign himself to lay down his life for his servants.  As we try to imagine what His suffering and death must have been, as we contemplate the suffering of those in our world less fortunate than ourselves, may we also take a moment to thank God for our many blessings; may we appreciate the smallest of things that make our life beautiful.

In the spirit of going without and perhaps gaining some understanding of what that might be like, and as our worship grows ever more reflective during this contemplative and solemn season, so shall our music also mirror that spirit.  There is no pipe organ.  The music and tunes we all know suddenly become unfamiliar and stripped of their excess to reveal a sense of simplicity and inward refection, expressed more through the simple beauty of the chants of the ancient church.

May the spirit of our Lord and his death and resurrection be ever present in our minds and hearts as we enter this Lenten Journey, as we reflect on He who made the greatest sacrifice because of His love for us.

May God bless you and keep you safe,

The Music Ministry

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS

Abstinence from meat on the Fridays of Lent (for those 14 and older) is required by Church law. Also, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fast days: those between the ages of 18 and 59 should eat less, meaning take no solid food between meals and only one full meal that day. Serious reasons such as one's health can excuse a person from these rules.  Parents are encouraged, by the law of the Church, to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance.
